Technological Innovation Driving Market Expansion
Battery chemistry mix continues to shift decisively toward cost-effective, cobalt-free formulations. Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) is both the largest chemistry by revenue and among the faster-growing, as LFP’s lower cost, longer cycle life and improved safety characteristics extend its reach from entry-level and mid-market passenger vehicles into a growing share of premium and commercial platforms. Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) retains an advantage in energy density for range-focused and premium applications and remains the second-largest chemistry, while Lithium Manganese Oxide (LMO) is the slowest-growing, reflecting its declining relevance outside legacy platforms.
Cell format is a second major technology axis. Cylindrical Batteries are the fastest-growing battery form, as large-format cylindrical cells gain share on their manufacturing scalability and thermal performance. Prismatic Batteries remain the largest format in absolute terms, reflecting their continued dominance among Chinese and Korean cell manufacturers’ standard production lines.
Within battery system components, Battery Thermal Management Systems (BTMS) are the fastest-growing category, ahead of Battery Management Systems and Battery Wiring Harnesses & Connectors. This reflects the rising thermal complexity of higher-capacity packs, faster charging rates, and the growing adoption of immersion and direct liquid cooling architectures required to safely manage heat generation at higher charge/discharge rates. Battery Cells remain the largest component by a wide margin, though their share of total system value is gradually declining as BMS, BTMS and connector content grow faster.
Trade & Supply Chain Dynamics
The battery cell supply chain has experienced substantial competitive turbulence over the past two years, and this report’s competitive analysis reflects the current, post-shakeout landscape rather than the more crowded field that existed in 2023-2024. Northvolt AB, once Europe’s most prominent independent battery cell developer, filed for Chapter 11 protection in the United States in November 2024 and subsequently for bankruptcy in Sweden in March 2025, in what became the largest industrial insolvency in modern Swedish history. US-based Lyten agreed in August 2025 to acquire the bulk of Northvolt’s remaining assets, including the Skellefteå manufacturing site, R&D facilities, and battery energy storage IP, but the acquisition of the Skellefteå site and Northvolt Labs did not close until 27 February 2026; Lyten is targeting commercial cell shipments from the site during the second half of 2026.
Automotive OEMs have responded to this supply-chain volatility by accelerating in-house cell production. Volkswagen Group’s battery subsidiary, PowerCo SE, commissioned its first European gigafactory at Salzgitter, Germany in December 2025, producing standardised “Unified Cells” intended to cover approximately half of the VW Group’s long-term cell demand, with the remainder sourced from external suppliers including CATL and Gotion High-Tech. This OEM-led vertical integration strategy is a direct response to the supply security concerns that Northvolt’s collapse crystallised for European automakers.
Not every OEM-backed cell venture has scaled as planned, however. Automotive Cells Company (ACC), the joint venture of Stellantis, Mercedes-Benz and TotalEnergies (via its Saft subsidiary), paused construction of its planned Kaiserslautern, Germany and Termoli, Italy gigafactories in mid-2024 amid slowing European EV demand and rising costs; as of early 2026 these two sites have been definitively shelved, leaving ACC’s Billy-Berclau/Douvrin facility in France as its only operating plant. This divergence between PowerCo’s successful ramp and ACC’s scaled-back ambitions illustrates that OEM backing alone does not guarantee successful gigafactory execution; capital discipline, chemistry flexibility and realistic demand planning remain decisive.
Regionally, Asia-Pacific’s dominant share of global cell manufacturing capacity continues to anchor overall market pricing and technology roadmaps, while North America and Europe are pursuing parallel strategies of OEM-backed domestic capacity to reduce dependence on Asian cell imports, with mixed execution success across different programmes.

The EV battery systems industry is consolidating around proven chemistry and format choices even as it absorbs significant competitive disruption. Northvolt’s bankruptcy demonstrated that independent, non-OEM-backed cell ventures face substantial execution and financing risk, accelerating a shift toward OEM-affiliated battery ventures such as PowerCo, though ACC’s parallel struggles show that OEM backing alone does not guarantee successful scale-up.
Companies and investors that correctly read both the underlying chemistry/format technology shifts and the evolving balance between independent and OEM-affiliated cell manufacturing will be best placed to capture value through the next decade.
