Ukraine, the Middle East and the Red Sea have shown how low-cost uncrewed systems can change the economics of attack, defence and replenishment. Expensive platforms, logistics routes and critical infrastructure now face threats that can be built, adapted and replaced at speed.

DroneTEX Makes UK Drone Ambition More Concrete

The UK has opened the Uncrewed Systems Centre at the new DroneTEX facility in Swindon, described by the Ministry of Defence as Europe’s largest drone testing centre.

At 545,000 sq ft, DroneTEX gives the UK a more substantial test and development base for uncrewed systems. It should help the Armed Forces test and field drone capabilities closer to the tempo of current operational demand, while giving smaller British companies a clearer route into defence experimentation and potential export opportunities.

Opening the facility, Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis said the “character of warfare is changing”, with uncrewed systems reshaping conflict “on land, in the air and at sea”. His wider point was that the UK wants to shorten the gap between emerging drone technology and military use.

The ambition is sensible because drone designs, electronic warfare countermeasures, software loads, payloads and production methods are changing faster than traditional acquisition systems. Test infrastructure matters, but only if it connects to buying decisions, production capacity and operational deployment.

The Strategic Defence Review set out £2bn in autonomy investment in this Parliament, taking total planned defence investment in autonomous systems to £4bn. UK Defence Innovation has also injected more than £142m to scale production of drones and counter-drone weapons, supported by a ringfenced annual budget of at least £400m.

The European Long Range Strike Approach has moved forward, with France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Sweden and the UK agreeing to transition parts of the programme into standalone ELSA Implementation Groups.

In the ministers’ communique, several clusters were described as having reached “a level of maturity”. The groups are expected to work under lead nations and focus on development and procurement projects, rather than remaining at the level of early coordination.

The cooperation spans airborne early warning, long-range SEAD, air-launched strike, the Euro Multi Missile Launcher, ground-launched systems from 300km to beyond 2,000km, and low-cost one-way attack effectors above 500km.

Ukraine has exposed the value of precision strike, the weakness of limited stockpiles and the risk of relying too heavily on US capability. ELSA is therefore not only a missile programme, but part of a wider attempt to close a capability gap that now sits at the centre of NATO deterrence planning.

The question is not only whether Europe can build longer-range weapons, but whether it can connect ISR, targeting, command-and-control and stockpile depth into a usable deep-strike system.

In the US, the Drone Dominance Program is testing whether low-cost drones can be bought at the volume and tempo current conflicts now require.

The US$1.1bn, two-year programme is designed to procure, integrate and train with high-performing drones made in the US. Its Phase II qualifier at Camp Grayling, Michigan, brought together 49 companies and 79 unmanned aerial systems for scenarios including long-range strike and close-quarters tactical assault.

DIU director Owen West said adversaries are scaling “UAS technology, tactics and industries” at an alarming rate. That points to the central issue for the US: rival systems are improving, but so are the production and learning cycles behind them.

The US has already ordered 30,000 drones, with a further 60,000 planned. DIU deputy director Travis Metz said those orders are based on competitive events and the gradual movement of supply chains into the United States.

The longer-term ambition is to reduce target unit costs from around US$5,000 to about US$3,000, but that will not be easy. Low-cost drones still depend on motors, batteries, optics, communications, software, explosives, guidance systems and secure supply chains, making scale-up a manufacturing, logistics and quality-control challenge as much as a technology issue.

The supply-chain issue is central because drone production means little if motors, batteries, cameras, chips or communications links remain exposed to foreign chokepoints.

Uncrewed maritime systems are starting to look less like a naval experiment and more like a practical tool for Indo-Pacific logistics.

Visiongain forecasts the global uncrewed surface vehicles market to grow from US$4.27bn in 2026 to US$9.76bn by 2036. That growth reflects rising demand for persistent maritime sensing, route security and distributed operations.

During Exercise Salaknib 2026, US Army personnel, Philippine Army forces and industry partners tested unmanned surface vessels in a contested logistics scenario. Soldiers assigned to the 125th Intelligence and Electronic Warfare Battalion used USVs to screen a US Army logistics support vessel as it approached port, supporting the movement of Philippine Army vehicles and personnel over more than 260 miles.

In an archipelagic theatre, ports, straits and logistics routes are difficult to protect with crewed assets alone. Small uncrewed vessels can push sensors further out, pass information back to command teams and support coalition situational awareness.

The commercial opportunity is practical rather than futuristic, with demand likely to build around autonomy software, sensors, communications, C2 integration and ruggedised systems for crowded, contested littoral environments.

Visiongain Insight: Maritime autonomy is most convincing when it solves a specific operational problem. Logistics protection, port approaches and littoral surveillance look more commercially credible than broad claims about fully autonomous naval operations.

Rare Earths Move Further Into Defence Strategy

The US Office of Strategic Capital has announced a US$725m conditional loan commitment with Energy Fuels to support domestic rare earth processing.

Energy Fuels, historically a uranium producer, plans to expand into rare earth separation and metallisation in the US. This sits in the midstream of the “mine-to-magnet” chain, where raw material becomes inputs for permanent magnets.

That midstream stage is the vulnerable point for defence planners. Rare earths sit inside motors, sensors, guidance systems and electronic equipment, while China’s strength in processing has left the US and its allies exposed.

OSC director David Lorch described rare earth midstream processing as a “national bottleneck”. The defence market is widening beyond primes and platforms into critical minerals, processing, magnets, electronics and advanced materials.

Visiongain Insight: Drones, missiles and electronic systems cannot be scaled without the materials and components behind them. Rare earth processing is now part of the defence capacity problem.

Market Outlook

The defence market is being pulled in two directions.

Governments still need ships, aircraft, armoured vehicles, missiles, air defence systems and munitions stockpiles. These programmes are expensive, slow to deliver and politically difficult to cut.

Demand is also rising for drones, autonomy, counter-UAS, long-range strike, sensors and critical supply-chain resilience. Visiongain forecasts the global military artificial intelligence systems market to grow from US$14.49bn in 2026 to US$45.18bn by 2036, at a 12.0% CAGR, underlining how software, autonomy and decision support are becoming central to defence modernisation.

Governments want both: they need to rebuild conventional forces while adapting to lower-cost, software-driven and attritable systems. That will force harder choices over funding, industrial priorities and acquisition models, particularly where spending commitments are not yet matched by near-term cash.

Technology alone will not be enough. Defence customers will look for systems that can be produced at scale, integrated into existing command networks, supported in service and replenished under pressure.
